Region definitions

For ease in regional comparisons, we have divided the Strait into 14 different subareas. These are meant to provide the most straightforward comparison with both zooplankton and fisheries data, which are similarly averaged into a set of subareas. However, the zooplankton and fisheries areas are not identical. Thus we have used a third classification scheme here, which is meant to provide reasonable comparisons to both of these other schemes at the same time.

The area covered by different regions, and the total number of regions, have changed slightly over the years. In 2022 we added region 12 for Indian Arm, and in 2023 regions 13 (for Bute Inlet) and 14 (for Cowichan Bay, which in the past had been part of region 1).
